BBC backstage Terms of Use
- Access to and use of the BBC content made available on BBC Backstage (http://backstage.bbc.co.uk) is subject to these Terms of Use, the BBC Privacy Policy, the RSS Licence (if you use RSS feeds) and/or API Licence (if you use the APIs) as appropriate.
- Whilst there is no substitute for reading the RSS Licence and API Licence here is a brief summary of what the Licences say:
You may:
- Use the APIs or RSS feeds ('BBC Content') for your own personal and non-commercial use
- Share your prototype or idea with anyone
You must:
- Include the following attribution that you use content from BBC Backstage: "supported by http://backstage.bbc.co.uk"
You must not:
- Charge users for accessing your work that contains or uses BBC Content
- Sell applications that use or incorporate BBC Content
- Re-edit or re-contextualise BBC Content in any way that is illegal, is or is likely to bring the BBC into disrepute or is otherwise inappropriate
- If you have any questions about use of Backstage, take a look at the Backstage FAQs to see if your question has already been answered.
- If you are under 16:
- Please get a parent’s or guardian’s permission before taking part in BBC Backstage.
- Never reveal any personal information about yourself or anyone else (for example, telephone number, home address or email address).
- The BBC may edit, amend or change the BBC Content that appears on the http://backstage.bbc.co.uk site at any time at its discretion. The BBC also reserves the right to modify or discontinue the http://backstage.bbc.co.uk site at any time.
- The BBC may alter these Terms of Use at any time by posting changes online. Please review these Terms of Use regularly to ensure that you are aware of any recent changes made by the BBC. Your continued use of Backstage after changes are posted shall indicate your agreement to adhere to and be bound by the Terms of Use, the Backstage Privacy Policy (including the RSS Licence and/or API Licence as appropriate) as amended or updated from time to time.

By using the BBC's APIs (APIs) on the Backstage website ("http://backstage.bbc.co.uk") you agree to be bound by the terms of this API Licence ("the Licence") and the Backstage Terms of Use.
- Licence terms
The BBC grants to You a non-commercial, world-wide, payment-free, non-exclusive, non-sublicensable right to copy, reproduce, download and/or publish the API's and alter, adapt, edit, incorporate, modify, translate and create your own product or services based on the API's (a 'Work') provided that You shall:
a. only use the API's for your own personal, non-commercial use;
b. acknowledge the source of the API's in your Work with the following credit: "powered by http://backstage.bbc.co.uk"
c. notify the BBC of the URL at which your Work can be viewed by the BBC and users of the BBC website and Backstage.
d. not publish, distribute or otherwise make the APIs available, (including in any Work You create), in a way that would enable other people to download or use the APIs other than as set out in this Licence.
e. only use the APIs and/or the Work for purposes that are not illegal, derogatory or otherwise objectionable or that bring the BBC or any third party into disrepute.
f. not infringe any third party's intellectual property rights nor remove, obscure, or alter any BBC copyright notice, trademarks, or other notices (including the terms of this Licence) included in the APIs.
g. you shall not create or use any script or tool that enables you to poll the API more than once every 3 seconds.
h. use development keys (if provided) and acknowledge that use of the development key shall signify Your agreement to the terms of this Licence. If no development key is provided to You then the use of the API shall signify your agreement to these License terms.
i. any other use of the API's requires the prior written permission of the BBC. Please e-mail backstage@bbc.co.uk. - Intellectual Property
The BBC shall, subject to the licence granted in Paragraph 1 above, retain all right, title and interest including intellectual property rights in the API's including in the BBC copyright notice and BBC trademark(s). The BBC shall not own any software You create in producing the Work, nor any third party components incorporated by You, in accordance with the terms of this Licence, into the Work. - No Endorsement
You agree that nothing in this Licence shall be construed by You as an endorsement of You or Your Work by the BBC and You agree not to directly or indirectly infer in or from Your Work any such endorsement or support by the BBC. - Disclaimer of Warranties
The BBC expressly disclaims all responsibility for any loss or damage arising out of or in connection with your use of the API's. The BBC API's are provided 'as is' and on an 'as available' basis and to the fullest extent permitted by law the BBC disclaims all express or implied warranties. - Indemnity
You hereby agree to indemnify, hold harmless and defend the BBC in respect of all damages, costs and expenses, including reasonable legal fees and litigation expenses, arising out of or as a result of any breach by You of the terms of this Licence or otherwise in connection with your use of the API's. - Termination
You may terminate this Licence at any time by destroying or removing all instances of BBC data gathered using the API including any BBC data incorporated in Your Work, however and wherever the Work is stored or hosted. - General
If any provision of this Licence is held to be invalid or unenforceable, it shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the remainder of the terms of this Licence
A person who is not a party to this Licence will have no rights under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 to enforce any of its terms.
This Licence shall be governed by English law and the English courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any claim or dispute which may arise out of or in connection with this Licence.
